The times I was in the Cavern Pub I noticed the performers were doing their own sound......no engineer in sight. The young people doing the sound in the other rooms other than the main ballroom in The Adelphi did a great job. You could tell they were on work experience or at least starting out but did a great job nonetheless. I thought The Overtures gig at The Philharmonic was awesome. The sound and visuals were spot on. I'm not quite sure if The Philharmonic performances were organised by CCT. I was advised not to buy a "Package" & to pick n choose from the various gigs on offer around town. I went to The Casbah on the Saturday after buying my tickets direct from them & was'nt disappointed. Met Pete Best in person & saw 3 incredible bands!! The only thing I would suggest is that they have more activities or places to go for kids. The Casbah was too cramped & claustrophobic and The Cavern too loud & sweaty. A bit more of a family friendly atmosphere in some venues would be welcome.

the thing about the pub is ...the only stuff going through the pa is vocals....and maybe a keyboard or accoustic guitar from time to time.....so if the band have their amps too loud/too low or the drummer is heavy handed ,theres not a lot that can be done anyway...... the lack of monitors usually means artists are continually askin for vocals/keyboards/acoustics to be louder ..... and askin a band to turn an amp down can be difficult .
ive seen engineers there trying to go out front and listen, but it can be a struggle to get out and back, the crowds can be dense, and ive seen them turn too loud vocals down only to be shouted at by the band. youve gotta feel for them sometimes, it seems like such a hard room.

Given that I think the vast majority of sound engineers should be taken out and shot following most gigs, you do make some valid points here nomeansno. They probably haven't got a clue what the sound is truely like FOH in the Cavern pub and getting a decent sound is based on experience and luck. I take your point it's not really practical for the engineer to go out front in the pub when it's crammed packed. Monitors are probably out of the equation for health and safety reasons but mostly due to lack of space. The Cavern pub is clearly not the best of venues for live bands but saying that you can't beat a great pub gig so when the sound is right and the place packed out - well it doesn't get much better than that. However the sound in Crosby suite is crap and it's not just down to the room. Yet there is much more space in there for the engineer to wander round now and again to get the band full-on but I rarely have seen them do that. That is inexcusable...........ready.............aim.........................fire!!!

Things i don't like about Beatles Week 2011.
Personally i love Beatles Week and this will be my fifth year on the trot. However, although i understand the current financial problems with the economy i am not too excited about this years line up. It's a good line up but it could be a fantastic line up. The bands that are missing this year are the ones that have made Beatles Week a fantastic success over the years. The list of missing bands includes:
THE REPEATLES, ROCKS OFF, THE BEAT BROTHERS, THE GETBACK BAND. THE BLACKBIRDS, ELEKTRIKA BARBARELLA, SIR FRANKIE CRISP, ALLYOUNEEDISLOVE plus many many more.
If The Cavern Club are organising Beatles Week well, who is paying for it? The answer is The Beatles fans who spend their money here year upon year.
Granted, the travel expenses to bring in the above bands is expensive but bringing in a major sponsor like British Airways, Easyjet, Budweiser or Carling etc. would pay for those expenses and others.
Am still looking forward to going though. Would like other peoples input. Also, i think the Sound issues could be looked at.

I believe part of the funding comes from Liverpool city council so if any cuts have been made then it will likely be as a result of reduced funding from the council.
Looking at the convention day bands it definitely looks like a reduced line up.

Looking at the convention day bands it definitely looks like a reduced line up. With the council having to make cuts that would explain it the lack of funding. Looking at the convention reduced line-up it still looks a tasty list for The Ballroom. Is it likely to be a bit chokker in there on the Sunday? There's still plenty choice though and i am undecided what to do on the Sunday with The Cavern, Mathew St Festival and The Convention. Can you get into the Convention later (at 5pm for instance) and pay half price? Philip

The last few years haven't been as chocker as they use to be in the ballroom on convention day. I've never gone in after 5pm I've always spent the full day there. The more I think about the thought of three hours where bands are only on in the Crosby suite is a real kick in the teeth to people who frequent convention day.

In past years, on the Sunday, there have been bands playing absolutely everywhere possible in the Adelphi, including Fridays bar, Cromptons, the Crosby Suite and the American Bar - if they've changed that format this year will be a huge disappointment for many people - myself included!

Phil - i agree with you about the bands that are missing, i loved them all (except elektrika barbarella!) Also on the subject of it not being as chocker, last year was deceiving because they had most of the bars closed so the ones that were open were 10 deep trying to get served! It was awful - so many bars in that hotel and on a busy night they only opened 2. This year Fridays is being used again so hopefuly things wont be as bad. I totally grudge spending all that money coming down and i cant even get a drink at the bar! Hmmph rant over! See yous next week!

Now private parties for pepperland? That's even worse! What's going on???

with you now. Thought you meant they were only using crosby suite for 3 hours!
probably a ploy to make people go to talks/watch films and spend money at the stalls so the stall holders will come back next year.

Yes you probably right about the ploy but the main focus should definitely be on live music. We've gone from 5 rooms at once with live music a few years ago to one room. Something wrong there I think. I suppose you need to buy extra tickets for Pepperland in the Crosby suite.

Is Fridays Bar part of the Adelphi Hotel or can I gain access without a wristband?

Is Fridays Bar part of the Adelphi Hotel or can I gain access without a wristband? Yes, it's part of the Adelphi. For convention day at least you will need a wristband or pay on the door for the convention to get in. On the odd previous conventions it has been closed off to the rest of the hotel and you could gain access from the side door to it like an ordinary pub.

I think i might avoid the convention this year for me it is mainly about the Live music you can catch the other bands in The Cavern. I don't begrudge paying the money if it is going to be comfortable and well-organised. The organisers have found some new gems as they normally do, so, there is plenty to look forward to. I will be coming down on Thursday on the train via Carlisle/Wigan NW so you never know i could bump into you at some point. Have a great time. Are you a Celtic fan? Phil

Hi Phil, we are travelling down on thurs too. Im not much of a football fan but yes my family are celtic fans! Where are you from? Sunday is going to be very different this year - I normally hang around the adelphi most of the day but this year the best of the music will be in mathew st and the outdoor stages! Cant wait for the all nighter though!

For me each Beatle Week is different to the last, which is good. There's so much choice on the Sunday and Monday i wish i was in two places at once. And all of a sudden it will be Tuesday and time to go home. Regards Phil

Slightly dissappointed this year with the lack of variety in the bands I saw. Almost every act ended their set with Abbey Road ending. Performed brilliantly (don't get me wrong) but I must have seen this at least 8 times over the weekend.
I think we have been spoiled over the past few years with bands performing albums in their entirety.
Hope this will be back next year.

I was a bit disappointed with Monday night at the Adelphi - The Tearaways performed a Rolling Stones set, not what I want to hear on the last night of Beatle Week! And their set massively overran so Revolver (or Revolution as they were introduced) had to crank through as many songs as they could in a truncated time slot.
May be a minor gripe but hey!
