On page 31 of the Magical Mystery Tour booklet from the stereo box set there is a photograph of The Beatles performing in the Saville theatre. Lennon is playing a brown electric guitar that I have never seen before. I like to think I would recognise just about any guitar that one of The Beatles was seen playing in a photo but this I have never seen. I think this particular photo has never been published until the box set. I have checked The Beatles Gear book but it's not mentioned in there. Does anyone anything about this guitar?

It was a one-off guitar made by Vox in the Dartford works called the Kensington. It had been shown at the 1966 Frankfurt Music Fair and then retrofitted with a row of pushbutton tone controls. Lennon later gave the guitar to that Magic Alex guy and eventually it was auctioned off by Christie's in the mid 2000's:

Thanks for that Andy. Was it made specifically for Lennon or did he buy it off someone? Is this the only known photograph of him with it?

It's actually detailed in my copy of Beatles Gear - there's a pic of it at a trade fair on page 209 and details on page 210. It was apparently a prototype given to the Beatles, so not made specifically for them. Both John and George played it during the filming of some scenes in Magical Mystery Tour.

Oh yes, I have seen it now. Those pages must have been stuck together for some reason!
