I have just come back from Liverpool and I was dismayed to hear that all the good work Ringo did at the opening ceremony and at the Echo Arena's inaugural concert has been undone by the very indifferent comments he made about Liverpool and its people on the Jonathon Ross show on Friday!
The people I spoke to were VERY disappointed with his comments and there were quite a few jokes made at his expense by some performers at the "Number One Project" concert I attended in Liverpool Echo Arena last night (Sat 19 January).
I haven't watched Ringo on the Jonathon Ross show yet so I cannot comment but I can tell you Liverpool isn't happy!

Some reactions on a Liverpool forum:
WARNING
There is some strong language in this material
Anyone watching him?!!!! So far unfortunately .....
Yeah, this is the second thread Ive posted my disgust in.
What a c**t!
What a sh*t Mexican accent!
New song singing about Liverpool as well - even me ma came in and said the same thing cheeky bastard, all well and good coming here and getting the glory -"they love me" Is he stoned? Does he think he's just having a chat with wossy and it's not going to be televised?! He certainly didn't come across well earlier "I had to pretend I missed it (Liverpool) to them" along those lines anyway.
Really do love The Beatles but what a complete tool Ringo Star seems to be. You can't beat Macca
He mocked Liverpool and came over as being bitter that there is no statue for him or that his old school wasn't named after him.
Unbelievable, does he think Friday Night with Jonathan Ross isn't aired up north or something? god I used to like him (for TTT reasons) but not anymore.
Egotistical megalomaniac. Was he payed for his appearance up here? I'm guessing he's not the type of man that would do it for free.
Ringo you were a sh*te drummer and singer, still are Pete Best was better than yer it's only cos you're an ugly c**t that you got in the band in the first place you talentless waste of space!!!
Those peace signs he makes really irriatate me, so false, how is he "trying to spread peace and love"?
He is just copying John, makes himself look a right fool.
Wrong. Ross gave him lots of leads for him to say good things about Liverpool and he basically spat them back in his face.Ringo was a comlpete arsehole last night and sh*t on Liverpool and the whole Capital of Culture year.
He's got every right to leave his home city and live elsewhere but to then say he misses nothing about it and basically say they've done nothing to honour him except name a road after him.How far up your own arse do you have to be,and to be so indifferent to Liverpool this year of all years. As I said originally, c**t.
The most unbelievably ingenuous man to walk the planet. I think when they went to India he missed the whole no ego thing that the maharishi would undoubtedly have been teaching.
I think I'd rather go for a bevvy with Dubya than this tit.
Came across as on horrible big nosed prick. Which is exactly what he is.
I knew everybody would take this the wrong way last night.
wrong way? how do you mean?
I think you guys have completely misinterpreted the whole thing.
Let me put it this way - I'm obviously not from Liverpool but I never saw last night as a slight by Ringo on the city of Liverpool. I'm sure some will have seen it that way but that is only because they are not very intelligent people so I don't think that the people of Liverpool really need to worry what those ignorant t**sers think of your city.
I was born in Harrogate and have lived here all my life. The quality of life here is fantastic. Whilst the people can be a bit snotty, there is next to no crime, fantastic schools, it's picturesque, plenty of jobs, affluency etc etc but if I suddenly became one of the biggest stars on the planet, had wealth beyond my dreams and spent the next 30 or 40 years travelling the world, staying in the finest hotels, getting the royal treatment and ended up in a massive mansion somewhere in the country and then Jonathan Ross asked me - is there anything I miss about Harrogate? I know what my answer would be. Is that dissing Harrogate? I don't think so.
No, to me he came across as someone completely in love with himself, not bitter but obviously has no affection for the city, openly disparaging it and it's people by saying "I had to say I had such a great weekend that I came this close to moving back".
and the song, jesus christ it's utterly patronising and cringeworthy David Brent couldn't have done any better. "destiny was calling and i couldn't stick around.... I followed my heart... but I never let you down" it's a song about him and his massive ego. Truth be known he is a very limited drummer who got extremely loveing lucky. He could at least acknowledge that instead of believing he is some sort of god figure.
and the laughing when asked the question if there was anything he missed about Liverpool?
loveing hell judging by the response on here are you surprised?
I love Liverpool and it's people. I hate to hear people coming out with predjudices about the place and having spent a fair bit of time there down the years and having met so many great people I'm always keen to defend it when I hear gobsh*tes spouting off but you know when you hear people talking about Liverpudlians having a complex (particularly in the media and Fergie with his chip on the shoulder comments) you guys sometimes make it very difficult to argue with. okay imagine it was your city, it's not even my city I just have very strong family bonds with it. but imagine it's your city would you prefer to have someone spout lies or just say nothing at all.
He said I grew up there, I have family there that's it! in other words I couldn't give a flying love about the place I just want to promote my album which coincidentally is called Liverpool 8, all he was arsed about on that interview was plugging his record and all he is arsed about in general is himself. that's what i took from it anyway.
He didn't promote Liverpool as a city in any way and was just there for his own gain. Even Ross was surprised by his laughing, I don't want a Billy Butler "We are the best city in the world" sh*te but last nights performance let the city down bigtime
It's not a complex when he openly laughs and has a go about it for love sake. He doesn't mind coming down here for the Capital of Culture opening(which he was probably paid for) to plug his album, song and ramble on about how "Liverpool never left him" and then a week later he goes on a show and basically says he doesn't miss it whatsoever and laughs about lying to people here that he did. He's a c**t and I hope people let him know when he next comes down here.
Cornelius he was invited back to Liverpool to help promote a city that has had terrible press since the 70's and is now tryng to do something about it.We have this great opportunity to tell the rest of the world we're on the up and asked a former son to help us. Instead he used it for his own gains by promoting his album and not once the city. Not only that but rather than not promoting it he actually tells the world that there's nothing there that makes him miss it.He was payed handsomly to help out but took the money without saying one good word to help.
As I mentioned before I have no problem with him not living here and he has every right to live anywhere he wants, but would it be so hard to say a couple of nice things about the place during the Culture year.Fair enough if he couldn't,it's not his fault if he has no affection for the place, but in that case stay away when offered a chance to celebrate this year.
Comes across as an up his own arse cocky twat and looked a right tool. After his interview last night my first thought was that all last week at St Georges singing his loveing wank song was a charade and he didn't really want to be there. Couldn't plug his new album enough last night and anyone that thinks his " Liverpool I left you " loveing song is decent is a bigger mong than him, it is a loveing load of sh*te with cringeworthy lyrics that in my opinion embarrasses Liverpool more than anything and Dave Stewart is a massive c**t as well. The prick has a massive opinion of himself when infact his talent is no more than hitting a few stretched skins with sticks so get over yourself yer big nosed ugly c**t. Here is an opinion you twat, Barbara Bach wouldn't have given you the time of loveing day you goofy skinny sh*tbag if you wasn't in the Beatles and she would prefer me scalping her instead of your boss eyed fat loveing head bearing down on her.
He also alluded to the fact that if you are dead then that is when you will have a statue errected in your honour. Well I hope the sculptor gets a commission very soon you loveing self important prick. This c**t seems to think that he has done us all a massive favour and we should be indebted to him forever..for loveing what. Everyone knows you where the Beatles ginger one from Girls Aloud, Wham's Andrew Ridgley so just keep your loveing head down and count your blessings you jammy bastard because that is all you loveing are mate, everyone in Liverpool knows it and even more so now after the last ten days so do us all a favour and love off back to LA for good and don't take the piss because we are not loveing thick like your lenses you short four eyed dickhead.
This is not about being over sensitive, I can take a joke and bad language but he came across as a right c**t and the thick bastard didn't even have the wisdom to sense that which is alarming.
Liverpool I left you......Good, now love off and don't come back..
This is how were different cornelius if i was lucky enough to be in a massive band or an actor or footy player etc i would never forget were i was from and id certainly want to give something back! And i can even guarantee that no matter how much money was thrown at me or Luxury houses yachts cars whatever i would still miss our fantastic city its people and humour!
I can honestly say if i was in his shoes now i would still look back on playing kick the can or man hunt in the entries at the back of ours! Having massive games of rounders or 40 on 40 on Stanley Park footy pitches! Blagging your free School Dinners at school and clothing grants!
Im doing ok for myself these days got a nice house abd car etc but the life i lived with a mum and dad just getting bye with 3 kids will never leave me we got all we needed and that makes me the person i am today it gives me an understanding!
So yes no matter of Money could make me not miss this city and if i was to say i didnt miss the place would be an insult to it because growing up here as made me the Adult i am today!
Maybe money is the difference for you and it could just erase your memories of groiwing up and being a resident of Harrogate if it is then thats a shame lad!
Based on that interview, hes a bellend.
He was brought back to Liverpool to promote the City and at great expense. He has used to City to get back into the spotlight with his song the very least he can do is promote the city in a positive light. The man is a prick. Light hearted or not the rest of the interview showed him to be a self centred tIt. Right up there with Tarby hubcaps joke.If you cannot promote a positive image of the cit when invited back please love of out of it.
Let's clear up a few daft interpretations first.
Ringo was a really fine drummer though no virtuoso by any stretch. Yet in the context of the Beatles music that was exactly what the doctor oreded. Solo musical virtuosity never really counted for much in that context of the world's greatest ever popular music phenomenon as The Beatles stood for 'the song' as god as distinct from the performance. So Buddy Rich's or Keith Moon's or John Bonham's would have been fish out of water. All's they needed was a really fine drummer to hold the songs together and that's what Ringo provided.
Second - I think someone dissed Macca for not being here at the start of CoC. Well all's I can say is that on the Jool's Holland Hogmanay Prog Paul answered the question from Holland re his wishes for the coming year with a totally unprompted rooting for Liverpool as Capital of Culture which took Holland unawares. It was as sincere and from the heart as anyone could have wished for.
As regards Ringo's performance on the BBC i play thing. Hugely disappointing he never used the opportunity to simply be positive about the city and the Capital of Culture instead of trying to get a cheap laugh from a southern studio audience and southern dinosaur like Woss. And yet the fact is Ringo has always found it necessary to answer any question put to him in public with a "clever" retort. As far back as his early Beatles days.
And yes you'd have thought in this instance he'd have made an effort to show a modicum of graciousness. But it's like the fella has never really grown up. He appears stuck in some time warp of diminished responsibility which seems to have retarded him from commenting on anything with even a smidgeon of sincerity or maturity. Whether his retorts are actually reflected in his real self I'm unsure but it sure looks that way. Sad bastard.
Bottom line is, however, the world wide exposure Liverpool has been afforded from his appearances last weekend mean that cheap laugh or not it's Liverpool which has "used" Ringo more than he's "used" us. The product he's promoting is as trite as they come whereas ours is the real deal.

Ringo seems to be making some very uptight people upset with his comments. He wants to be remembered for more than his days in the Beatles. That was known as controversial to some, but I understand how he feels. If he was knocking his old hometown of Liverpool. I believe some took it way too seriously in the first place.

Tough town: Ringo Starr's shrub sculpture gets the chop after Beatle 'insults' LiverpoolLast updated at 16:45pm on 8th April 2008 Boris Johnson learned his lesson the hard way. And now it seems so has Ringo Starr. You can't insult a Scouser - or their home town - and get away with it. A foliage statue of the 67-year-old Beatle unveiled just a fortnight ago has been beheaded, though John, Paul and George were left alone. It comes after Starr outraged parts of Liverpool in January when, days after opening the city's European Capital of Culture celebrations, he said he missed nothing about the city. Poor Ringo appears to have lost his head thanks to an angry Scouser The statue of the Fab Four as it was before the attack The vandal struck nearly three months after Starr's appearance on BBC1's Jonathan Ross show. Asked by Ross what he missed most about the city the drummer laughed, pulled a face, and eventually said apart from friends and family he missed "nothing". Starr also admitted that he hardly ever returns there. www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=557990&in_page_id=1770

Only just read this thread but i recall at the time watching Ringo on Ross and being slightly amazed by the whole thing. He came across as a right idiot and it made me laugh when I thought back to all the McCartney - Egotistical comments you've all heard down the years.
Ringo came across as fake, self-centred and very ignorant to the whole city, capital of culture thing and what it all meant to peopl.

Blimey, those Liverpudlians seem to have a short fuse:
SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has outraged fans in his native Liverpool, England - by agreeing to play a concert at the ground of his favourite soccer team's rivals. The former Beatle, 65, is due to perform at Liverpool Football Club's Anfield stadium on 1 June (08) to celebrate the city being named 2008's European Capital of Culture - despite declaring himself a supporter of the opposing local team, Everton. He says, "It is always lovely for me to go back to Liverpool and play for the home crowd. I am looking forward to that, it should be cool, even though I am in Everton fan officially. When it comes to the crunch, my dad was born in Everton."

Its not like Macca has ever come out as a die hard football fan or anything though is it.
That said, I'd never play at certain football grounds out of principle :-D
