One of my students asked me a few weeks ago if I knew what the first song the Beatles ever wrote was. I told her I'd look it up but forgot. So she reminded me today that I never told her the answer. I researched at lunchtime but for the life of me I couldn't find it!! When she asked me again after lunch she was very disappointed that I didn't know! Which was kind of funny, but now I WANT to know. I feel like such a bad Beatles fan. I mean, shouldn't we ALL know this?? Is it known? It must be. HELP!

I think it has to be 'In Spite Of All The Danger' co-written by Paul and George, and recorded by The Quarrymen in 1958. It's on Anthology 1 if you want to play it to your students.

Paul McCartney has said that the very first song he wrote was I Lost My Little Girl

Was he a Beatle at the time? And was it written for The Beatles?

I'm sure there is footage of of Paul discussing this song with John Lennon during filming for Let It Be and John says he remembers it.
I suppose it depends on what we define as "The Beatles" - were The Quarrymen The Beatles simply because John, Paul and were in the band, or do The Beatles start from the moment they first called themselves by that name?
Mind you, In Spite Of All The Danger has been included on a Beatle album so I guess we should consider them as such.
