Was the mystery of where John's Gibson J160E guitar disappeared to ever solved? Was it stolen, did it fall from the car Mal Evans was driving... what's the story?

I read his first one was stolen in December 1963. Lennon bought this second Gibson J-160E to replace his first. It was practically identical to his first. The only notable differences were a second white ring around the soundhole and an orange label inside. This 160E was the one Lennon used most frequently afterwards, although he often picked up Harrison's to play as well. The guitar, having a P-90 pickup, was very prone to feedback. Lennon used this to his advantage by getting the very unique sound on "I Feel Fine".
This guitar changed as Lennon changed. Although it began as a sunburst color, just like his first, Lennon soon had it painted by pychedelic artist "The Fool" in 1967. The guitar was later stripped down to natural wood, and Lennon etched in caricatures of himself and Yoko Ono. All three "stages" of the guitar have been reissued by Gibson. An interesting note: for some reason, both Lennon and Harrison moved the pickups on their 160Es in 1967 from above the soundhole to near below it

The guitar that fell and was smashed on the motorway was one of George's Gretsches. And Mal was not driving - it was their sometimes driver Alf Bicknell, he tells the story often, but sometimes calls it "a banjo"!
John definitely used George's J160E a lot afterward - maybe it was particularly good. I got to play it once and it actually felt TERRIBLE though! I don't think they were guitar "experts" at all!
