OK, hopefully the two versions of Do Wah Diddy should now be playable again. I have a question, do both songs have to be from the 1960's?

Not necessarily, but as the majority of songs have been from the sixties in this thread, maybe we could have another thread illustrating US vs UK tracks from other decades. What do you reckon?

Here's another American and British versions from the 1960's, they are as follows: Have you ever heard the original version of Twist and Shout? It's by the Top Notes, was produced by Phil Spector and is absolutely awful!! Have a listen! [music]http://www.the-end-uk.com/music/tastopnotes.mp3[/music]

Sticking with the Herman's Hermits theme - here is the original version of I'm Into Something Good by Earl Jean, lead singer of The Cookies. I did always like The Hermits version until I heard the original - now I won't listen to anything but Earl Jean's! Let me know what you think Earl Jean - I'm Into Something Good [music]http://www.the-end-uk.com/music/iisgearljean.mp3[/music] Fixed (hopefully!)

I have forgotten about the TOP NOTES version and I can see why, it does sound awful!

For the first poll: Etta James most def. For I'm Into Something Good: Herman's Hermits, one of THE most greatest songs from them. And as for Twist & Shout: The Beatles. You can never go wrong with John's voice and tune. Hope to see more soon guys!!

Me too. I heard it on a jukebox in a Liverpool bar when it was released, and have loved it ever since. The singer was, of course, Christine Perfect, later to star in Fleetwood Mac. I only found out about the Etta James version while watching the "Muscle Shoals" documentary. Terrific, full of emotion. I really like both versions. Another pair to compare would be The Searchers "Ain't gonna kiss ya"
and the original, by the US girl group The Ribbons....
... two totally different approaches, and both enjoyable.

Another example... the original by Bobby Parker:
....covered in the UK first as an instrumental by the John Barry Seven:
The song became a favourite of Merseybeat groups, for example the Clayton Squares recorded as version, as did Kingsize Taylor. This live version, includes legends Chris Farlowe and Cliff Bennett:

A little off topic (anything to keep this going), but hearing most covers from the Beatles for the first time, then hearing the originals later is interesting, to see how the Beatles made other hits sound like their own.
Ironically The Beatles & other UK bands were getting records from the US through their ship ports and playing them live at the beginning.

I can think of two more UK versions of this track (for what its worth) one is by the 1960's Band of Joy and the other was a dance version in the 1990's. The was possibly a house remix.

The original, by Richie Barrett
A favourite of many Liverpool groups, including the Beatles. A great version was recorded by the Big Three....
