Mine would be a very close call between Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust.

The name ZIGGY coulld have been inspired by a number of sources...
"Ziggy's" was the name of a London tailor's shop that Bowie saw from a train one day. In an interview he said that it was his private joke that because Ziggy Stardust was going to be largely about clothes, he had named him Ziggy. It is also likely to be a derivative of Iggy (Iggy Pop) and possibly Twiggy (the British model) who appeared with him on the cover of his 1973 LP "Pinups". It was also, as Bowie later told Rolling Stone, "one of the few Christian names I could find beginning with the letter 'Z'."
Another possible source of the Ziggy name comes from Bowie's connection with Marc Bolan in the late 1960s. "Zinc Alloy" was the name that Bolan intended to use if his then current group "Marc Bolan & T.Rex" failed. But it never transpired. Later Bolan would parody the Ziggy album with his own called "Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders Of Tomorrow" released in 1974. So Ziggy could have been a combination of "Zinc" + "Iggy".

Hi Ron! Welcome back!! Hello Al', I have not been away, I read this forum quite often, it's just until this thread I had nothing to say. One thing that might interest some of the members of this board is a little piece of trivia, who stepped into my shoes when I left the 'Riot Squad'?, clue? well this thread is about him!!! Please give my best regards to your Dad and your Mum for me, and tell your Dad, 'up the Lillywhites'.

Hi Ron, great to hear form you again AH! I had heard that rumour about Bowie - it's a shame no recordings exist of him in the Riot Squad (or do they?). Did you happen to meet him on your travels? AL

AL Hello Al, no I never did meet him, I met most of the Sixties Stars British and American, including Gigs I did with Gene Vincent, and Bill Haley, but never got to meet David. I 'met' the Beatles when they first came to London, they were in an old Ford Van, John was driving and he cut me up in Denmark Street, London's Tin Pan Alley when I was trying to park. I shouted at John something quite nasty, he told me to 'go away' (but it began with an 'F'), I laughed and so did he, and he gave me a friendly wave and drove off. Please give my regards to your Mum and Dad.

On the subject of Bowie, I always remember wth affection a story he used to tell (and possibly still does). You need to use a bit imagination but here's the transcript as told by the man himself : DAVID BOWIE Musician ''During the very early days of Ziggy Stardust, we often used to play these fairly grotty clubs called the 'workingman's clubs.' They were sort of like nightclubs but you got a cheap meal. Well, backstage one night I was desperate to use the bathroom. I was dressed in my full battle finery of Tokyo-spaceboy and a pair of shoes high enough that it induced nose bleeds. I went up to the promoter and I asked, 'Could you please tell me where the lavatory is?' And he said, 'On the far end of that wall. You see that sink? There you go.' I said, 'My good man, I'm not having a piss in there.' He said, 'Listen son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you.' From which I learned that mixing elements of bad taste with good would often produce the most interesting results.'' I still laugh about it.

I remember asking the advice of an old time comic I knew back in the Sixties when I started playing big Clubs and Theatre's, he said 'always suss out who going to pay you, and keep your eye on them, and never wash in the dressing room sink', sound advice.

My favorite early album is The Man Who Sold The World. A dark 'hard rock' album with Mick Ronson establishing himself as some sort of riffing guitar hero. Nobody ever mentions this album and if they do, it's only ever the title track. Another serious underdog that I thoroughly like through and through is Earthling. It's even better than the completely creepy Outside . And I like Bowie's version of "Try Some Buy Some". I like all those late '90s/'00s albums. Frightfully underrated!
