Beatle Week is now just 9 months away!! Highlights next year will include a fantastic show at the Philharmonic hall entitled, "In My Life" featuring Liverpool's own Mark McGann! Also planned - an afternoon visiting some of The Beatles old haunts in Liverpool City Centre such as The Jacaranda and The Blue Angel bar. To top the week off, we have the original Searchers performing at The Cavern Club on Tuesday 1st September, not to be missed! 2009 will also be the 40th anniversary (yikes!!!) since the recording of the now legendary albums; Let It Be and Abbey Road! Also coming back to Liverpool are some Beatle Week legends, The Overtures, Nube 9 and Pepperland. More details will follow soon

It really does my head in that The Overtures get top billing at Beatleweek year after year. I ask you, why is this the case when their set is barely half Beatles songs. Technically they are ok but ceratinly no better than a lot of bands that play over the week. I remember a few years ago on convention day they were the last band on in the main ballroom. The atmosphere was amazing with the previous bands that had been on then this lot came on and proceeded to do a load of sixties covers interspersed with the odd Beatles song. I felt so cheated (a bit like at the end of convention day 2008 but that's another story). It's a shame as when they held the last 'albums years' at the convention they made a reasonable stab at Revolver. I ask you again! the highlight of Beatle week and it culminates in a band that are probably just about adequate for your works christmas party and they are headlining convention day! God it makes my blood boil.................................. Bill Heckle must be the father of that Dennis Pugsy bloke who sings. It's the only possible explanation!

Different strokes for different folks - I happen to love The Overtures and for me they are the highlight of the week! I even booked them to play my 40th birthday bash! But hey, I can see what you're saying

Hi guys , I must say i can defo see where Mr Mustard is coming from .The Overtures have a lot of energy ( not to say A little more hype behind them ) but are no better or worse than any other band appearing during Beatle Week And Would Say , If Pushed, That Their Billing As Headliners Is A Little Bit Repetitive Now ? As For That Great Band From Chicargo , Instant Karma " , They deliver every time And For Me ( Horses for courses here ] are the best band over the last four years !!

Oh yes, that's right I forgot they are good for birthday parties as well as christmas.................. Seriously, I just think it's a bit much for any band to play at The most important celebration of Beatles music and perform anything but Beatles (or related) songs especially at the big advertised stages the Overtures play during the festival. It's all about selling tickets and packages these days, I understand that, but I believe the true spirit of Beatleweek is slowly being eroded away by corporate, over-hyped and over-rated bands playing year after year. There are other examples but I wouldn't want to offend anyone if they had booked them for their wedding anniversary or something. Ok, in light of this tirade lets have your top 5 Beatleweek (or just Beatle convention) bands since 1981. In no particular order mine are Mojo Filter (the one's that performed during the 80's) Ringer Fab Faux (I know they are not too well liked on the forum) Instant Karma USA (I have to agree with In My Life here. I saw them 3 times last Beatleweek and thought they were great. Walls and Bridges was amazing) Club Big Beatles or Lenny Paine (when they had the old lead singer).

"Top 5 Beatleweek (or just Beatle convention) bands" - this would be a great idea for a topic on its own, I think

the reason why the Overtures are popular at BW is because once you've heard 'Hey Jude' for the Gazillionth time you're glad to hear something else like 'Friday on My Mind'. They play the music that inspired and was inspired by the Beatles.
If you want Wall to Wall Beatles then instead of going to the VIP go down the Cavern - bound to be a Beatle band on.
& yeah you're right they play weddings - just the likes of Elvis Costello's and Elton John's
but I guess i'm not supplying an unbiased view on this - i've been a fan for the last 10yrs.
you follow your BW and i'll follow mine and we'll all have a good time.

As I said, different strokes for different folks - we all have a different ideas on how to enjoy our Beatle Week, however I am of the same opinion as you. By the end of the week, I've had enough of the 20 minute versions of While My Guitar Gently Weeps or the same Hey Jude encore and I'm grateful for the instant party The Overtures bring. The good thing is there so much going on during Beatle Week one band wont ruin it, as I found out last year! One particular band we saw, who shall remain nameless, were absolutely dreadful, the worst I have ever seen/heard - I have no idea how they earned the nod to play, when there are FAR better bands eager to perform.

I wouldn't for one second suggest how you or anyone else should be enjoying their Beatleweek experience, I am merely giving you my take on this aspect of it. I for one have never been to the VIP show. I go to the Sunday Beatles convention which I have been to for many years - my first in 1982 when I was 12 years old. To me convention day is the most important part of Beatleweek and I believe this day should be solely devoted to Beatles (or solo) music. I get quite precious about this day and I don't believe it's being supported by CCT in the same way as it use to be and lot more effort is going into other areas of the week. But hey, that's just my take on it.

Yeah, I do think the actual Convention day has been scaled down a lot over the years. It did used to be one of the highlights of the week - I used to spend all day looking around the stalls and, popping into some of the interviews and video shows... and spending a lot of money! It actually took me just an hour to go round all the stalls last year and a didn't spend a bean! Very disappointing!

I'm guessing here, but it's probably more disappointing because each year there's less and less for you to discover, because you know more than you did before. And possibly a lot of the things for sale you already have. Part of the magic has gone.

For example, I was specifically looking for that DVD boxset but no-one had it, which surprised me!

Hi guys !1 , Just to say my wife and myself along with our daughter have attended BW for the last four years and convention day is still the highlight for us , especially the guest interviews . I Would say though these are, on occasions thin on the ground as far as the audience attendence ,even when the guest is significant ( as i,m sure they all are !! ) to the story of our fab four . These interviews i for one find fascinating , Especially when the Quarrymen along with Ken Brown were the interviewees in 2006 , what a convention that was !! I was privledged to not only meet them all and aquire numerous autographs but i got to take a photograph of their reunion with Ken , which is the photo used on their website!!! I do Agree though the more convention record fairs one attends the less you tend to spend because for myself iv,e tended to restrict my purchases to those items ie vinyl , books and DVD,S i know iwill never part with ,as opposed to buying all and sundry and evetually selling them as surplus items on ebay !

The thing is the convention day is long established, a lot of people still just come for the Sunday. It doesn't need to be pushed in the same way the other days do.
Although a few external factors that will affect it,
Youtube is allowing fans to watch the rare clips that Keith shows at anytime of the year/day.
Guest talkers who are contemporaries are, i'm sad to say, gradually moving onto that great Cavern in the sky. Most authors/researchers have little fresh info to add.
There's free live music in the Cavern Quarter and other bars in town, which takes people away from the Adephi as well as dividing the bands.
Ebay is making it easier for collectors to track down that rare item at bargin prices and making it cheaper and easier for dealers to sell (why pay a few hundred for a stand in the Adelphi when you can sell the same items just paying a few pence to list it on ebay? why travel a load of stock around the country for only a fraction of it to sell?)
The global economic situation which initally made the pound very strong making it expensive for international visitors to come over or buy from the stalls and has now turned to make everything expensive for everyone. (this has been on the verge of threatening the Saturday Auction too! - talking of which anyone here got pics of John Lennon's jeans being sold?)
& that's without the got everything/heard it all before reasons already mentioned.
