Hi folks,
I don't think there is a dedicated thread re: a forum meet-up for IBW 2009, so I thought I'd start one.
One or two folks have mentioned a meet-up in other threads, I thought we could tidy things up and agree something within this one?
What do people think about a meet-up early(?!) Saturday 29th. A few of us probably would have met up by then anyway, but it's an ideal chance for everyone to get together as different people stay for different parts of the week, it's the one day that should be available for everyone.
I say early, as the IBW schedule is so packed that as the day goes on, we are all going to want to be off seeing various bands.
I'm thinking we could all do a "Ferry 'Cross The Mersey" - (sorry folks, I can't pay for you all!) at say, 11am (1hr) and after visit the new Beatles Story annexe/extension (and see the Fab 4-D exhibition) at the brand-spanking new Mersey Ferry Terminal (our new canal link at the Pier Head is great too) All that fun would probably take us up to about 2pm and folk can then carry on with pre-paid IBW events if they wish.
Aside from IBW, there is a load of other places I could take you if we have time - just ask The End how good Panoramic Bar was last year!
So, what do people think? Too early in the day maybe, or about right?
Meeting point could be outside the new Mersey Ferry Terminal at 10.45am, Saturday 29th August. (it does not ALL have to be about meeting in bars!)
PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS JUST AN IDEA AT THE MOMENT, NOTHING HAS BEEN CONFIRMED - We had an incident last year when a meet-up was "sort of" arranged and only one person turned up! (long story!)

Nice one, thanks Rob, that's a great idea! What I'll do later is put a voting form on this post and let members decide whether they want to take you up on your idea or instead meet up in The Grapes before moving to The Cavern Pub (as is the tradition, sort of!). Many thanks We had an incident last year when a meet-up was "sort of" arranged and only one person turned up! (long story!) I'll explain, as I recall (and I haven't got the greatest memory!) there were a lot of suggestions and ideas floating around the day before I left for Liverpool and it caused quite a bit of confusion (which is why I sent my mobile number to everyone that had expressed an interest in meeting up) - inevitably the original idea got lost and people ended up meeting in different places! However, in the end it was a big success because we did all eventually meet up (albeit a little later than planned) in the Caven Pub - Beatle Forum attendees were: MrKiteand his friend, ArthurLee and his brother, NowhereMan, Iain (Get Back Band) and of course me and my mate Steve! AL PS Only two weeks to go!!!!!!

As I recall, and this may be one of those urban myth things - you know, like the 'Paul Is Dead' controversy - it was mentioned by someone at the pre-arranged time and venue (I was there to witness this statement) that you were still in bed after a heavy session the night before. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the clock in the venue had stopped at precisely 11:00 am on that Saturday morning and some graffiti on the toilet wall was 'BISIA'. Now I thought that this was a Beatleweek band from Egypt making their debut appearance in Liverpool but then it all became apparent. This is the scary bit (forget IF28 and a barefoot Paul) but, reading the graffiti backwards, it spelled out the word 'AISIB'. Bloody hell. After 'phoning a well known exponent in all things weird and wonderful in the graffiti department, the message bacame clear. OMG - wait for it - it could only be one thing : AL IS STILL IN BED Don't deny it AL, the signs were there.

See: www.panoramicliverpool.com/It was a 'Nowhere Man' optional extra last year and well worth the trip, I'd love to show it to it to a few more of you, time permitting, which during IBW is in short supply. I think we also did St. Georges' Hall? - Make sure you all get along there this IBW, the Royal Minton Floor is on display (a rare treat) and there is George Harrison exhibition on as well, free entry.

Wow, Rob, The Panoramic. Very posh! Sorry, had to say something, although I shouldn't judge as I have never been there. What about a decent, old-fashioned pub like the Pig & Whistle?

Well, I was very impressed - despite being almost quite literally dead on my feet we had a nice drink up there - cups of tea all-round!! Amazing views of Liverpool too - highly recommended if you fancy a chill out!

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS JUST AN IDEA AT THE MOMENT, NOTHING HAS BEEN CONFIRMED - We had an incident last year when a meet-up was "sort of" arranged and only one person turned up! (long story!)Hi Nowhere Man Long story indeed. In fairness to Al, things were changing all the time during the week before the 'scheduled' meet up and I think that Al was on a hiding to nothing in trying to organize it, especially as some people at the last minute decided to do something different on that Saturday but failed to notify Al. As I recall, however, there was surely more than one person though? My brother and I turned up and I think that, including us, there were at least 5 people including Al. Maybe the 'one person' got confused and turned up somewhere else? I agree that the Saturday should be the date for the meet up. Anyway, your 'Ferry Cross The Mersey' idea is very plausable but you have to remember that potential attendees include people from Spain, Argentina and Ashington . I'm sure that the 'first time at Beatleweek' people would want to settle into a pub initially where it would be more 'comfortable' for them to meet other 'well worn' Beatleweek people and would want to be near the pubs and clubs of Mathew street so that there 'next port of call' would be The Cavern Club or somewhere where there would be live Beatle music within a minutes walking distance. Don't get me wrong, your 'Ferry Cross The Mersey' is a fine idea but I think people would be thinking what they would be missing back at Mathew Street whilst crossing the Mersey to a place where there maybe wouldn't be live music and then having to return to Liverpool again on the ferry. And I know expenses will be at a premium during Beatleweek and it may prove to be expensive for some people to embark on that journey. Also, maybe those with IBW commitments may be on a tight schedule that wouldn't, perhaps, allow such an undertaking? I'll go with the majority and will vote acordingly when the time comes. I don't have a problem with your suggestion and I'm bringing enough money to cover such ad hoc eventualities but I'm thinking of other people here. I've actually never been on a ferry cross the Mersey in the last 5 years I've been to Beatleweek so it is appealing. Let's wait and see the suggested alternatives and make our votes. Whatever happens, I'm really excited about this year's Beatleweek and Mathew Street Festival and I'm also looking forward to meeting friends old and new. Under 2 weeks now.

'first time at Beatleweek' people would want to settle into a pub initially where it would be more 'comfortable' Chance will be a fine thing with the crowds that Mathew Street pulls in! Ferries are licenced to sell alchohol and there won't be a long queues like the Mathew Street area. ...people would be thinking what they would be missing back at Mathew Street whilst crossing the Mersey to a place where there maybe wouldn't be live music I could always sing..? ...then having to return to Liverpool again on the ferry. I know the Wirral can be a bit dull, but don't worry, stay on the Ferry, the river cruise is 50 minutes long if you don't get off, it will bring you safely back to Liverpool. ...expenses will be at a premium during Beatleweek and it may prove to be expensive for some people Expenses may be an issue for a lot of people (me included) The River Cruise costs £6.30, it's around £2.60 a pint in the Cavern Pub / Cavern Club, so one option would be to skip a couple of drinks and do something different. I've actually never been on a ferry cross the Mersey in the last 5 years I've been to Beatleweek There you go, now is your chance with a bunch of like-minded friends Some people may not want to do it / be able to do it and that's fine, it was about throwing an idea out there and giving people a choice. All the comments you have made make perfect sense, I'm sure people, new to Beatle Week or not will want to be in the thick of the IBW action and the bars, Cavern etc (me included) but remember that this is proposed for 11am, for 40 mins, when it's there is no entertainment on anywhere else (bands will start at The Cavern at 12pm) but I can provide 'entertainment' for free (ideal for those on a budget) simply by giving some of my time up, as well as the pre-recorded commentary on the ferry, you will get the benefit of my knowledge of the city en route. Also remember that the Ferries themselves form part of Merseybeat music history, the very reason why we are all the in the first place! If all that was not enough, think of the other benefits: • Visit the Pier Head (there was a famous shot of The Beatles there, I can't find it on-line). • Meet and greet fans from this forum in comfort and be able to have a conversation without shouting over loud music! • Visit Liverpool's superb new canal link at the Pier Head. • Visit the new Beatles Story Museum at the Mersey Ferry terminal, if only to look around the gift shop (admission charges apply to exhibitions such as The Fab 4-D) • View Liverpool, the city The Beatles loved so much (expect Ringo ) from the river and experience the vista that is the famous waterfront with architecture old and new. It's one way of seeing everything in the city centre in one go. • From 11.50am people are free to go to The Cavern Quarter, or embark on pre-paid IBW events. I could understand apathy if I was proposing a shopping trip to Primark (which by the way, the Liverpool store is the UK's largest) but this little excursion is directly related to why you are are all coming here in the first place! As I say arthurlee, it's an idea, if folk don't want to do it that's fine More info: www.merseyferries.co.uk/

I think everyone agrees the Ferry 'Cross The Mersey is an absolutely brilliant idea! Personally speaking, the only problem for me would be the departure at 11:00 am - given my proven track record of getting up in time for midday meet-ups!! LOL!! However, I agree with ArthurLee - I'll also go with whatever is the most popular option. Thanks again Rob AL

I was simply voicing my thoughts and opinions. And of course you're quite right - the ferry excurson is very influential as far as Liverpool and it's music is concerned. I'm going to see Gerry & The Pacemakers at Newcastle City Hall in October! I know it's an idea - and a good one at that. Al's idea is a good one too. But it's a simple matter of preference. As I say, I'm more than willing to go along with the majority vote.

My group from Scotland will be arriving at Lime Street round about mid afternoon on the Friday. We usually go to The Crown for a couple of beers, then we will be going to our hotel, via the Philharmonic, to dump our luggage. Will probably be in Mathew Street, or should I say The Grapes, round about 5. If anybody is around at that time, we are very amenable, especially after a beer or 6, don't bite, or scrounge, (well, not much, anyway LOL) so feel free to say "Hi". Look forward to seeing you all.

We have no name, but we should easily be spotted by the amount of times we frequent the bar. There will be 4 lads and one lassie, she'll be the bouncy one, I will probably be wearing a Prellies t shirt on the Friday, and a baseball cap with a CCCP hammer and sickle on it.
